Gastric Bypass has been demonstrated to be an effective form of weight loss surgery, having more than 20 years of proven success. This is because patients see rapid initial weight loss, and most maintain the majority of their weight loss years after surgery.
This type of bariatric surgery is more invasive than other surgery options. It consists of making the stomach smaller by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach using surgical staples. The smaller stomach is then connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine (jejunum) that has been detached from the upper portion of the intestine (duodenum). This causes food to bypass the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine. The gastric bypass surgery will alter the normal digestive process, causing fewer calories and nutrients to enter the body. This can lead to nutrient deficiencies and requires a permanent change in eating habits.
Gastric Bypass surgery remains the “gold standard” by which other weight loss surgeries are measured.
