For many patients, gastric banding surgery has not been as successful as their physicians had anticipated. Some have experienced less weight loss than desired, erosions, and slippage. This has resulted in 15 to 20% of these patients’ bands being removed during the first five years after placement.
Dr. Turton welcomes the opportunity to discuss these issues with you and outline a workup to evaluate whether the band is in good position or if erosion has occurred. Dr. Turton will discuss your particular issues and discuss options of removing the band, as well as the feasibility of doing another weight loss procedure such as a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy or a laparoscopic gastric bypass. Many times, this can be done at the same time. For some, it is best to not do a combined procedure. In most cases, this removal of band and subsequent surgery is covered by insurance.
