We provide you with all of the changes and information you will need to utilize your new surgery.  You will have several one-on-one visits with the surgeon and/or a dietitian to help you understand and apply the knowledge.  All of the follow information will be thoroughly reviewed during our comprehensive classes that are available prior to surgery.

Pre-Op Liquid Diet

Following a 1-2 week high-protein, low-carbohydrate liquid diet prior to bariatric surgery is required. Following this diet promotes liver shrinkage, which enables a quicker, safer surgery for the patient. Most of our patients follow this diet for 7 days prior to surgery and we have found this more than adequate compared to some of the longer pre-op diets. Below are some recipes that can help you achieve this goal.

Bariatric Liquid Protein Supplements

When choosing liquid protein supplements from the pharmacy or grocery store, it is imperative that you read labels. Look for powder or pre-made liquid supplements with:

  • At least 15 grams (g) of protein per 8-ounce (1 cup) serving
  • Less than 20 grams Total Carbohydrate per 8-ounce serving
  • Less than 5 grams fat per 8-ounce serving

Guidelines:

  • Protein is the priority! The average patient needs 80-90 grams daily. At meals, always eat protein first.
  • Do not drink while eating. Wait at least 30 minutes after a meal before having fluids.
  • When you drink, sip. Don’t gulp, use straws, or drink alcohol.
  • Take 20-30 minutes to eat each meal. Stop eating when you feel full. If you keep eating, you may vomit. Overeating also stretches the pouch and may keep you from losing weight.
