Congratulations on taking the first step toward a healthier you! A BMI of over 30 indicates that you are heavily overweight. Your health may be at risk if you do not lose weight. Stages of overweight are medically defined by body mass index (BMI). A BMI of 30 or more is classified as obese.
Overweight individuals are also at risk for developing health problems such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain types of cancer, gout and gallbladder disease. Being overweight can also cause problems such as sleep apnea (interrupted breathing during sleep) and osteoarthritis (wearing away of the joint cartilage).
If your BMI is between 30-34.9, and you have a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes, bariatric surgery (also called weight loss surgery) may be the answer for you. Recent studies have indicated that surgery can frequently allow people with diabetes to totally discontinue medications soon after weight loss surgery. In these patients, “Diabetic Surgery” may be the answer.
